Gmail is a free, advertising-supported email service provided by Google.[4] Users may access Gmail as secure webmail,[5] as well as via POP3 or IMAP4 protocols.[6][7] Gmail was launched as an invitation-only beta release on April 1, 2004[8] and it became available to the general public on February 7, 2007, though still in beta status at that time.[9] The service was upgraded from beta status on July 7, 2009, along with the rest of the Google Apps suite.[10][11]

Gmail is really starting to stand the test of time as the best email client. Unlimited storage, clean UI, easy sorting and preference tools are just a few of its perks. The most recent redesign has been a huge productivity boost for me as I can now have several new emails started as pop-up windows and still be referring to information or email addresses from an open message in the main window. Really love the integration with Gdrive which I have used to almost completely replace my use of the Microsoft Office Suite due to its cloud-capabilities, sharing permissions, and the ability for teams to real-time collaborate on the same document at the same time (though you could argue SkyDrive is offering similar features). Don't mind the social integration - it's nice to make those connections even if you're not particularly into G+ which I am not.

Cant do without it, but the social side (Google+) tends to get in my way when trying to simply email people. Its too integrated with other random Google services, but still one of the best email clients... Period...
